چکیده

Birth-death processes have been widely used for different biological applications, the most common of which is stochastic modeling of population dynamics. A review of these applications can be found in Novozhilov et al. (2006). In this letter we illustrate a method to obtain approximate formulae for the steady-state mean and variance, of a birth death process involving a single species with arbitrary polynomial birth-death rates. These quantities are useful measures of variability in a population due to demographic stochasticity. Recent work (Keeling, 2000) has also used the coefficient of variation, defined to be the standard deviation divided by the mean, as an extinction measure for the population.

A derivative matching approach to moment closure for the stochastic logistic model.

Continuous-time birth-death Markov processes serve as useful models in population biology. When the birth-death rates are nonlinear, the time evolution of the first n order moments of the population is not closed, in the sense that it depends on moments of order higher than n. For analysis purposes, the time evolution of the first n order moments is often made to be closed by approximating thes...

Approximate Closed-form Formulae for Buckling Analysis of Rectangular Tubes under Torsion

The buckling torque may be much less than the yield torque in very thin rectangular tubes under torsion. In this paper, simple closed-form formulae are presented for buckling analysis of long hollow rectangular tubes under torsion. By the presented formulae, one can obtain the critical torque or the critical angle of twist of the tube in terms of its geometrical parameters and material constant...

Stochastic Models for Chemically Reacting Systems Using Polynomial Stochastic Hybrid Systems

A stochastic model for chemical reactions is presented, which represents the population of various species involved in a chemical reaction as the continuous state of a polynomial Stochastic Hybrid System (pSHS). pSHSs correspond to stochastic hybrid systems with polynomial continuous vector fields, reset maps, and transition intensities. We show that for pSHSs, the dynamics of the statistical m...

Analysis of unreliable bulk queue with statedependent arrivals

In this paper, we investigate a single-server Poisson input queueing model, wherein arrivals of units are in bulk. The arrival rate of the units is state dependent, and service time is arbitrary distributed. It is also assumed that the system is subject to breakdown, and the failed server immediately joins the repair facility which takes constant duration to repair the server. By using suppl...
